INTRODUCING WHITEBEAM COURT: WHY WE NAMED OUR WALM LANE DEVELOPMENT AFTER A TREE
Why We Named Our Walm Lane Development After a Tree
Whitebeam Court is the name we’ve chosen for our development of 48 new homes at 110 Walm Lane, Willesden Green. The name comes from the whitebeam, a native British tree, and reflects the tree-lined character of the Mapesbury Conservation Area the building sits in.
Below, we explain why we chose it, share the latest progress from site, and give you a closer look at the homes.
Why we chose the name Whitebeam Court
We chose Whitebeam Court because trees have always defined this part of Willesden Green. 110 Walm Lane sits within the Mapesbury Conservation Area, designated by Brent Council in 1982.
The Mapesbury estate was built mostly between 1895 and 1905. It is known for its wide, tree-lined streets and mature gardens, which give the area an almost park-like feel. That green character is one of the main qualities the conservation area exists to protect.
We wanted a name that belonged to that story, rather than one that could sit on any building anywhere. Naming the development after a tree felt like the most natural way to connect it to the street around it.
What is a whitebeam tree?
The whitebeam (Sorbus aria) is a native British tree that is well suited to London’s residential streets. It is one of the species included in the Mayor of London’s list for street tree planting across the boroughs.
It is valued for qualities that matter on a street like Walm Lane:
- It has a compact shape that suits urban settings
- It tolerates pollution well
- It needs little maintenance
- It supports pollinators and birds
For us, Whitebeam Court connects the building to Mapesbury’s green heritage, while looking ahead to the kind of resilient, climate-conscious planting London’s streets will need in the future.
